Internships…

Good internships are experiences that you can never replace. It’s to bad as a freshman in college you don’t understand that you can do one at anytime. Yes, most companies want a student with more experience; a student that is in their junior year and will be a senior the following year, or will be graduating soon. If you are confident in your skills, and you are willing to learn, the year you are in school has no effect on you. I found that the best way to find these companies was to determine what your interest were then to search the net for companies, and to talk to other students to find out what internships they had participated in, and of course I would talk to my professors. They receive offers for student internships and jobs more than we know.
The past 6 months I have spent time looking into different companies finding out what internships they offer, and if they don’t have any internships available is it something they would be willing to look into. I fount that 6 times out of 10 they were willing to at least interview me for a position as an intern. One of my first questions I would ask was do they pay their interns, because I don’t like to work for free. The pay depended on each company, however most companies I talked to did offer some kind of pay which was helpful. Side note - Most internships are not paid and you are just trying to gain experience.
This past summer I found an internship at Walgreens, by going to the career fair at Southern Utah University during the spring semester. It was one of the greatest experiences I have had, and to top it off they paid me $14.00 an hour 40 hours a week. This fall semester I also went to the career fair and found a paid internship to go to Washington DC to work for Senator Orrin Hatch at the capitol.
If you want an internship, you can find one. The pursuit can be intense, but the rewards are worth it. Start looking as a freshman, and take an internship every summer! You will have a convincing resume when you graduate and will be one of the first to be offered a position because of your experience.
